Main Street Monticello is partnering
with Jefferson County Historical
Association to present a 3 day
conference entitled “First Floridians:
First Americans” to be held in
Monticello, FL on Oct. 4,5,6, 2012.
Scholars and laymen will explain the
history and pre-history of Jefferson
County as revealed by the
archaeological digs in the Aucilla
Basin area. That part of Jefferson
County has several Spanish Mission
sites. It has Paleolithic sites around
14000 years old worked by the Center
for the First Americans at Texas A & M
University.
Mike Waters of Texas A&M, Mary
Glowacki, Florida’s State
Archaeologist, Jim Dunbar, President of
a local archaeology society and other
archaeologists, anthropologists,
historians, scholars and laymen
familiar with these sites will make
presentations with question and answer
sessions. Our audience will be made up
of academics and the general public. A
display of artifacts found in local
digs will be shown. We will publish
the proceedings.
